Lawton Gallery

My favorite location activity was visiting the Lawton Gallery http://www.uwgb.edu/lawton/. Since I love artwork and do some of my own, I was really looking forward to trying to find something that related to mass communication.

The one piece that I thought was very interesting depicted a field with trees in the background. Among the trees you can see a man-made tower of some sort (you probably cannot see this tower in my picture). Here, you have a nice scenery but you can’t escape the man-made structure sending some sort of waves to a mass audience somewhere. This is a perfect example of how mass media has affected, not only us, but our surroundings as well.

Artwork has been around since the beginning of time. Before language, books, and photography, artwork was how history was told. Now, thanks to television, the internet, and books, we have more access to the artwork from around the world. In turn, because of these media, an artist can send a message thru his/her work to a huge audience. From this standpoint we can see how artwork serves as a mass communication device.

Lawton Art Gallery

For one of my location activities, I went to the Wisconsin-Green Bay's Lawton Art Gallery http://www.uwgb.edu/lawton/. This art gallery consist of artwork that local Green Bay students have made. Walking through this gallery showed that many of these artist had different tastes, styles, and ideas in their artwork.

There were many pieces of art that I caught my attention but the one that caught my attention the most is in the picture above. I loved how this picture blended the colors together. This is my favorite kind of art because it makes people have to think what it actaully is. While staring at this picture I wonder many things like what kind of state of mind was the artist in when creating this picture and if each color represented something more significant than someone can tell by just looking at it.

There was a lot of different kinds of art in the gallery and some were photographed pictures. I never really saw this as art until I saw the picture named "Bringing Sexy Back." At first this made me laugh cause the person that was in the photograph was a dancing overwieght man with his shirt off. After looking at this photo a little closer i realized that the point the artist was trying to get across was everyone is beautiful in their own way. I really like this because it shows that everyone should be comfortable with their own bodies and how some people can only focus on external things.

Walking around in the Lawton Art Gallery really made me realize that so many people have different ideas and thoughts on what art really is. I have only been to a few art galleries in my life but this made me realize what I was missing. I enjoyed looking at a picture and trying to understand and guess what the picture was about. There was a lot of pieces of art that I enjoyed and a few that I do not fully understand.

Lawton Art Gallery

I had the opportunity to visit the University of Wisconsin Green Bay’s Lawton Art Gallery
http://www.uwgb.edu/lawton/. The Lawton Gallery has pieces of art on display created by Green Bay students. There were many different types of displays including paintings, drawings, and sculptures that were truly magnificent pieces.

While looking at the different pieces I came across a particularly interesting one that is pictured with me. I found this an interesting piece because it was so unique. The horse made me think of how essential horses used to be for daily living. They provided transportation for people across the world since people did not have cars or airplanes.

The pieces on display were captivating to look at, but I found it very odd that there was so much white space on the walls around the art pieces. The Gallery was intimidating in the fact that there was so much white space. I believe they did this to make the different pieces stick out for the viewers but almost found it to make the gallery seem bare.

Some of the pieces were quite shocking to look at. One picture included four men in a metropolis where the residents are eating their own body parts. I find it interesting that in art people can display such insane scenes to the public but I believe if this scene was acted out in a movie the movie would have had an R rating with limited public viewing.

When visiting this gallery I realized that it was my first time ever visiting an art gallery. I think this may be because I grew up in the country, which limited different things I could do. If I had grown up in the city I have no doubt that I would have already had the opportunity to see an art gallery. I also believe that if I had lived in the 19th century I would have never had the opportunity to view art like this.

After visiting the Lawton Art Gallery I have found a new appreciation for art. Artists need to have a lot of talent and imagination to create so many remarkable pieces. I am extremely grateful that I had the opportunity to view this talent.

University of Wisconsin-Green Bay Lawton Art Gallery

I was able to visit the Lawton Art Gallery,
http://www.uwgb.edu/lawton/ which is located on the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay campus. The exhibit that I was able to experience displayed pieces of art that was created by university students. The forms of art that I was able to see included drawings, sculptures, paintings or a piece that was created from more than one media.

Two pieces of art really captured my attention as they connected to information that I had
learned in the Mass Communications class. These two pieces include,Needles and Thread by artist Kasey J. Hembel and Because “WE” say so by Jenna Neumann.

Needles and Thread is an art piece that contains different forms of media which include, news clippings, pieces of fabric, thread and various buttons. These forms of media all work together to create the idea of how society has viewed the ideal women throughout different ages in time. This art form displays three females from different centuries that all reflect the “perfect body” from those times. Above these images the following phrase is represented through different styles of font, “It’s hard to blame others for the stitches when you sold them the needles and thread.” This reflects the idea that society creates ideals of an unachievable perfection that individuals obsess their lives over. Mass communications plays a role in this because they broadcast these imagines of ‘perfection’ through print, audio and visual elements.

Because “WE” say so, also depicted this same ideal of “perfection” but in relations towards the male gender. This art form displays a well dressed businessman that is slim, tall and good looking. The image of a business man reflects how society expects men to be the successful 'breadwinners' for their families. Success is expressed in this image because the male figure is standing on dollar bills that are larger in size than the actual person. These pressures are apparent with the three panel mirror that represents how society looks at men constantly to see if they are meeting the stands. Mass communications again plays a role in establishing this ideal because it this image is shown to the public through a variety of medias. Mass medias does not only inform or entertain people, but it also shapes society and ideals that they believe and strive to achieve.

These two images are not only interesting to look at but they also address issues that society needs to evaluate in the sense of how they use mass communications for the positive and negative. After visiting the Lawton Art Gallery, I was able to understand how mass communication is present everywhere we look or hear. It was not the first time that I had visited the gallery but it was the first time that I really took my time to look at each piece of art in order to discover how mass communication had influenced the artist to create their specific image or sculpture.

Neville Museum

For one of my research activities I visited the Neville Museum to view their exhibit On the Edge of the Inland Sea http://nevillepublicmuseum.org/exhibits/on-the-edge-of-the-inland-sea. The Neville Museum is a wonderful public museum that is a perfect way to experience and learn about America’s past through pictures, clothing, scenes, videos and stories.

Pictured with me is a scene from the Native American life when people had to hunt and gather all of their food to stay alive. This woolly mammoth used to be a food favorite for humans because it was easily available. I found this very interesting because there are so many different steps involved with food in the modern world. Most food has a huge marketing place in our everyday lives since we see adds stuffed in the newspaper, on commercials on TV, on billboards, and many others. Our food choices are guided through our daily activities instead of what we can find and kill.

I was very interested in all of the different forms of clothing that were on display. Being a girl I love clothes and was enthralled with the wedding dress on display, the flapper clothing and even the confederate and union uniforms. I find it amazing how much our fashions change over time slowly and reflect who we are.

It was very interesting to me that there was so much focus in the museum on the Green Bay Packers. Wisconsin is very centered around the Green Bay Packers in every aspect of their lives including their museums. I would be interested to visit museums in other states to see if they have displays of their football teams.

I was very grateful of my trip to the Neville Museum. I learned many new things and brushed up a bit on my history. When visiting the museum I found myself looking at the displays in a different light and wondering how different aspects of their lives were controlled by the media.

Visit the Neville Museum

For one of my location activities, I visited the Neville Museum http://www.nevillepublicmuseum.org/. It was very interesting to notice how prevalent mass media was in the past. Sometimes we take for granted how important the mass media has become and how essential it is in linking the past to the present.

One thing that I thought was interesting was all of the old photographs of Green Bay. The pictures included photographs of Packer players as well as regular people. It was like looking through a window to the past.
Another thing that I found interesting was a silent film about Green Bay. It was called A Gay Day In Green Bay which was produced in the early 1900’s. The movie showed various footage of early Green Bay. I am pictured here standing next to the display. I found this to be especially interesting because it really shows the effect of the mass media.
Museums have experienced change thanks in part to mass media. They have more access to history through videos and the internet. Through mass communications, museums are able to help connect us to a particular time and place.

Neville Museum

One of the location activities that our group has decided, was to go tothe Neville Museum in Green Bay http://nevillepublicmuseum.org/. The museum was very interesting seeing a lot of history that I never really thought about before. While walking around the exhibits, I noticed that mass communication was a huge part of the museum and others.

At the Neville Museum there were many things that kept my interest the entire time. The number one things that interested me was the giant stuffed Woolly Mammoth and cavemen in the beginning of the museum. This part of the museum was my favorite because it made me laugh. After I got a good laugh got a good laugh at the exhibit, I learned that this was representing the Native Americans and how they hunted. This also showed the struggle and danger it took for the native americans to get food. Going off the last statement it also kind of represented how hard it must have been to get food from time to time back then.

Another thing that peaked my interest was the the forest layout that they had in following room. They had a stuffed Bald Eagle that looked almost real. In this room the museum also had other animals such as other birds and fish. I really enjoyed this because I am an outdoors person and like seeing some animals up close and personal.

The Neville Museum and other museums are linked to mass communication because the museum opens up a gateway of learning for all people that want to enter the museum. I really enjoyed going to the museum and learning more about history.
