Location Activity

95.9 Kiss FM Radio Station

For another one of my location activities I had the opportunity to visit 95.9 Kiss FM in Appleton. http://www.959kissfm.com/index.php. The tour that took with Scott Stevens opened my eyes to a possible career in radio. Scott Stevens explained that Kiss FM is a part of a big company known as Woodward Communications. Some other radio station that are familiar with Woodward Communications is 104.3 The Breeze, 1570 The Score, and my favorite 94.7 Razor. Stevens told me that all the radio station in their company are meant to target different age groups and interests.

Scott Stevens explained many aspects of radio to me. One of the main things that Stevens made know was 360 recorder, which is a fancy word for voiceover recording. He told me that they use for most of the radio programs and when a caller calls to edit anything that they might say that is vulgar. Stevens also told me that his radio show was actually airing right now but he recorded his show before we started the tour. Scott also told me that the company has to edit out the songs themselves. This surprised me because I just figured they recieve the songs already radio edited.

Scott later brought me to engineers room, where there was a lot of wires and computers that held the entire place together. He told me that it can only take a few wires to be unplugged to stop airing shows, but he said in case of that to happen music will automatically play to take over the radio broadcast.

When the tour was finally over it made me really want to go into radio broadcasting. Scott Stevens really helped me realize how fun and rewarding being a radio DJ could be. He also showed me that there are different possiblities someone can do in radio. Overall I think that this was the best location activity that I went on and it really made me more interested in a career of mass media.
