Introduction to Mass Communication 102

Location Activity

Lawton Gallery

My favorite location activity was visiting the Lawton Gallery http://www.uwgb.edu/lawton/. Since I love artwork and do some of my own, I was really looking forward to trying to find something that related to mass communication.

The one piece that I thought was very interesting depicted a field with trees in the background. Among the trees you can see a man-made tower of some sort (you probably cannot see this tower in my picture). Here, you have a nice scenery but you can’t escape the man-made structure sending some sort of waves to a mass audience somewhere. This is a perfect example of how mass media has affected, not only us, but our surroundings as well.

Artwork has been around since the beginning of time. Before language, books, and photography, artwork was how history was told. Now, thanks to television, the internet, and books, we have more access to the artwork from around the world. In turn, because of these media, an artist can send a message thru his/her work to a huge audience. From this standpoint we can see how artwork serves as a mass communication device.
